We decided to depart Dalat via our second overnight bus - this one was not as comfortable. For some reason, the attendant decided there were assigned seats (even though our tickets indicated no such thing). He sent Dana and I to the back of the bus, where there is a low-ceilinged "cave" of four tiny reclined seats. We stayed there during the 6-hour ride but I don't think I got any sleep.
Since we left Dalat around 11pm, there was little traffic and we made great time. Unfortunately, this means we arrived in Saigon at 4:45 am. Now, most Vietnamese people start their days early. But apparently not
that early. So, we had a taxi drop us off at a hotel, and we were allowed to sleep on some wooden benches until they had a room ready for us a few hours later.
Needless to say, we were a little sleep-deprived on our first day in Vietnam. So, we decided to take it easy and explore our little area of the city - Pham Ngu Lao.
Ate some healthy salad at a nearby cafe...
...And sampled some frozen yogurt! There is frozen yogurt all over southern California, but this is the first time we've seen it in Asia. About time!
Bananas must be Saigon's favorite fruit. We saw tons of people selling bananas: on the side of the road, next to restaurants, at markets, by fruit stands, and on carts:
